Lord Home The Builder The Teacher
Lord of the Manor The Man
Success in administration, is measured largely by the extent by which good teaching and sound scholarship have been made the rule in the school – no matter how well organization and other things of things of preparatory value have been done.
Livingston C. Lord,
The Life and Words of Livingston C. Lord, 1937
You are the soul of the college… in a sense that does not attach to any other institution that I have ever heard of.
Mr. Johnson, in a letter to Lord, 1921. From
Eastern Illinois State College Fifty Years of Public Service, 1950
Livingston Lord’s integrity as a leader was instrumental in providing a foundation for the developing institution. From the day to day handling of operations to solving unexpected problems, Mr. Lord handled each task thoroughly and, in many cases, personally. Lord did not hesitate to make difficult decisions when needed. Part of being an administrator included firing teachers and dismissing students whose work was unsatisfactory. However, he always kept the school as his focal point.
