CCLHP: Deposition of Mary A. Ronsey
I am a citizen of Coles County, Ill. going on nineteen years of age. My husband Lafayette Ronsey was confined in the jail in the town of Charleston some time in the month of February last I went to the Jail to see my husband. Whilst there they were talking about releasing my husband and letting him go into Captain Taylors Company William Hanks the Jailer spoke up and said that he would much rather release a man to go and fight for uncle Jeff. Than to go and fight for old Abe Lincoln to free the negroes He also said that if there was a man inside of that cell, that would go and fight for uncle Jeff & the Southern Confederacy he would release him in twenty four hours.
