CCLHP: Deposition of Marcus M. Hill
That I was in Charleston on the 28th of last month and witnessed the most of the fight as well as much that occurred before. John Frazier came to me and asked me if I pointed him out to a soldier I answered him that I did not. James OHair then came up and said boys don’t return many words with them we will give them hell in the out come. This was about twelve oclock noon. When the shooting commenced I was James Miller’s Store north east of the Court House. Just before the fight commenced I saw John Frazier, Nelson Wells, James OHair, Jess OHair, John OHair, Henderson OHair, and many others that I did not know or cannot now recollect. There must have been as many as thirty in the squad east of the Court House in the yard. I heard James OHair say that if he could get Major York he would be satisfied. When the shooting commenced I did not notice where these men were I saw John Frazier sit on his horse in the street east of the Court House and shoot twice with his pistol pointing into the Court House Yard. I also saw Robert McClaim and Jess OHair each shoot one a piece in the same direction – but from the point where I stood could not tell who they shot at.
