CCLHP: Deposition of John Reah
State of Illinois
Coles County
I, John W. Reat upon oath says that I was at Charleston, Ills. on the 28th day of March 1864, being the day of the Raid made by the Copperheads and saw John Redman behind Esq. Edwards office on the east side of the Court House with a pistol—did not see him shoot but I judged from his actions that he was acting in concert with the main band of Copperheads, which were actively engaged in the Raid. I saw Elsbury Hanks shoot, but do not know who he shot at--he shot towards the soldiers in a body.
