CCLHP: Deposition of Joseph B. Hutchinson
Joseph B. Hutchinson after being first duly sworn according to law, on oath states that he was in Charleston in said County on Monday the 28th day of March 1846, during the time the riot took place that some time previous to the commencement of the firing he was standing at the corner of Chambers and McRorys store N. W. corner of public square John Frasier and Martin Hill were talking together and Nelson Wells told Frasier not to talk to such trash as he is and there seemed to grow some excitement out of it a few soldiers gathering there Bird Monroe got the soldiers to way and told the butternuts to go away and not hold such a crowd there would not be so much excitement. I went to the depot then and when I came back Sol. Cassel told one of the O'Hairs were talking and Cassel told O'Hair he was not a white man any man that was for Jeff Davis he did not call a white man. Nelson Wells then spoke up and said that there were plenty of Jeff Davis men round and I got up on the stair steps & did not hear what was said anymore there was in the crowd at the time John Frasier two of the O'Hairs Wm McMorris Blufort Brooks John Reynolds and a good many more that I cannot think of their names at this time this was at the North West corner of square. I then went to Lewis store on west side of square the crowd left about the same time and went into the Courthouse yard and the firing soon commenced. I saw Joseph Carter shoot at Col. Mitchell also another an that with Carter shoot at Mitchel I saw John Frasier shoot three times from his horse from the east side of the square I saw a good many others shoot but I did not know there names they all seemed to be shooting at the soldiers.
