Join the EIU Department of Music for a day of Low Brass Events on Sunday, March 9, 2025 in the Doudna Fine Arts Center.

This one-day event will include recitals, masterclasses, and will feature guest artists Clayton Maddox, tuba and Myles Blakemore, trombone.

The EIU Low Brass Day is open to all trombone, euphonium, and tuba players of all ability levels! If you have any questions, please feel free to email George Alberti.

Myles Blakemore, Trombone

Clayton Maddox, Tuba

Clayton Maddox, a native of South Bay, Florida serves as Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium and Assistant Director of Bands at the University of South Alabama. He is an active soloist, chamber artist, and educator. He has previously held teaching positions at Arkansas Tech University and Henderson State University.

Clayton has competed in several international competitions such as the Leonard Falcone International Solo Artist Competition and the International Tuba Association Solo Artist Competition. He is a founding member of the Boreas Quartet, which debuted its first album, "The Serpent's Kiss", and has since received the Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording from the International Tuba and Euphonium Association. He is also the music director of the Backburner Tuba and Euphonium Collective.

As an in demand soloist, Clayton has traveled to Tokyo, Japan to perform a solo recital at Yamaha Ginza Headquarters and Sapporo, Japan where he performed a recital at the historic Sapporo Clock Tower. He has performed with several professional orchestras such as the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony, and Orquesta de Sinfonica in Monterrey, Mexico.

He holds degrees from the University of Alabama, University of Memphis, and the Louisiana State University where he was a Huel D. Perkins Fellow. His primary teachers have included Demondrae Thurman, Paul Weikle, James Jenkins, and Joseph Skillen.

Myles Blakemore, Trombone

Myles Blakemore is Assistant Professor of Trombone at the University of Maryland School of Music. Prior to this position he served as Trombonist in the US Navy Band.

He has held other notable positions such as Trombonist in the US Naval Academy Band, a fellowship with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, the Rosemary and David Good Fellowship with the Minnesota Orchestra and 2nd Trombone in Symphony in C in New Jersey.

As an orchestral musician, he has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic, National Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Virginia Symphony and Washington National Opera, among others. Myles has also attended premier music festivals including Aspen Music Festival, Brevard Music Center and National Repertory Orchestra.

As a soloist, Myles has been a featured artist at the American Trombone Workshop and the International Trombone Festival. He can be heard on his debut album “Bach-ish," which features works inspired by Bach.

Blakemore has served on the faculties of Howard University and Morgan State University. He currently spends his summers teaching at the DC Trombone Workshop and the Brass Institutes of America.

A Dallas native, Myles is a graduate of Southern Methodist University, where he studied with John Kitzman. He received his Master's Degree at the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Per Brevig in the Orchestral Program. He has also studied with Ian Bousfield, James McNair, and Weston Sprott.
