HyFlex Course Development
HyFlex Course Development Institute (HCDi)
The HyFlex Course Development Institute (HCDi) was established to provide faculty at Eastern Illinois University who have met the EIU Online Course Policy with a professional development opportunity to experience best practices in HyFlex instruction and guidance in HyFlex course development. The HCDi is for EIU faculty developing or redesigning a HyFlex course and teaching HyFlex for the first time at EIU.
Registration
Registration is open to anyone who has met the EIU Online Course Policy and preparing to teach a HyFlex course at EIU. To register, go to https://eiu.libcal.com/event/15880117.
Goal
The goal of the HCDi is to provide EIU faculty with suggested guidelines and training necessary to develop a quality HyFlex to help enhance the HyFlex teaching and learning experiences of both faculty and students and encourage effective engagement and collaboration in all HyFlex modalities.
EIU Online Course Policy
To complete the prerequisite of meeting the EIU Online Course Policy, interested participants must have completed the Online Course Development Institute (OCDI), Illinois Online Network’s Master Online Teacher certificate or another documented and equivalent training activity before enrolling in the HCDi. Reference the EIU Online Course Policy PDF.
Objectives
Upon completion of the HCDi, the participant will be able to:
-
- Design a HyFlex course that provides equivalent learning experience in all modalities in which their HyFlex course is delivered.
- Align learning objectives, assessments, and instructional content to ensure accessibility and effectiveness for learners in all modalities in which their HyFlex course is delivered.
- Implement engagement strategies that promote active learning and interaction in all modalities in which their HyFlex course is delivered.
- Meet the university requirement for teaching a HyFlex course at EIU.
Topics
The course contains six content modules. The topics of each module are listed below.
- EIU HyFlex & The Syllabus
- Learning Objectives
- Assessments
- Instructional Content
- Engaging Learners
- HyFlex Teaching Demonstration
Format
The HCDi Training Course is an online, self-directed course. Participants work through the content modules at their own pace. However, the facilitator is always available to answer questions, provide consultation, review assignments, and post grades and feedback.
Time Requirement
What is the time requirement necessary to complete the HCDi? The training has been developed into a self-directed, online asynchronous course because this format allows faculty to begin at any time and progress through at their own pace. Because the course is self-paced, completion time often depends on many factors including the motivation, experience, and time demands of the person completing the training. A list of module activities and deliverables is included at the end of the syllabus to give you a better idea of what is expected.
HCDi Certificate of Completion
To earn the certificate of completion for the HCDi, the participant must:
- Complete all activities in the six content modules in the HCDi Training Course in D2L.
- Deliver a HyFlex Teaching Demonstration in all HyFlex modalities of the participants course.
HyFlex FAQ
To support faculty interested in teaching a HyFlex course, the FDIC team and our faculty collaborators have developed a HyFlex Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide. Whether you are curious about or actively planning to teach in this modality, this guide aims to provide answers to common questions. Please note that individual courses must receive approval for HyFlex delivery before being delivered in this format. Also, this FAQ is a living document that will be updated as more information about HyFlex is developed. Please email questions about HyFlex to fdic_help@eiu.edu.
