Subject: Information regarding Essential Employees on Election Holiday, November 3rd
As previously communicated, Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2020 will be a holiday for Eastern Illinois University. While most of the campus will be able to observe this holiday, there will be “essential” employees identified who will be required to work in areas where operational needs exist. The University Police Department will be staffed, as will the Steam Plant. In addition, those whose primary role is to provide support to our students may be required to work. Examples might be Building Service Workers who support residence halls as well as staff members in housing and dining who provide meals to students. This is not an all-inclusive list. Supervisors should discuss staffing plans as soon as possible to provide adequate notice. If you believe you may be identified as an “essential” employee and your work schedule for November 3rd has not been discussed with you, please consult with your direct supervisor regarding your role or attendance status for that day. Any “essential” employee who must work on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 will be provided the opportunity to take time off at another time, with supervisor approval. Employees who must work on November 3, 2020 and who will be utilizing another day off, must do so prior to February 1, 2021.
Please note that the following eligibility rules apply for holiday compensation. Employees must be in an approved pay status, with or without pay, on the last scheduled work day before the holiday and the first scheduled work day following the holiday in order to receive holiday pay. Employees who are subject to the provisions of a prevailing-rate area agreement or a collective bargaining agreement will be paid according to the terms of the respective agreement.
Questions regarding the Election Holiday may be directed to Human Resources at humanres@eiu.edu or by calling 581-3514.
