EIU Pine Honors College

National Scholarships and Fellowships

What follows are brief descriptions of national awards supported with advisement by the Sandra and Jack Pine Honors College. Campus-level competition is open to all current students and recent alumni who possess exemplary academic, service, and leadership records and meet set eligibility criteria. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship   Awards of up to $7500 per year to apply toward junior and/or senior year tuition, fees, books, and room and board   Sophomores or juniors
Requirements:
(a) better than a 3.80 cumulative GPA; (b) practical research experience at EIU, of more than one semester in length; (c) past participation in an REU; (d) a record of having externally presented or published, or having been approved to externally present or publish, a portion of their research work
 
Boren Fellowship
  Coverage amounts vary by length of experience and documented expenses, with the maximum award for a two-year experience not including supplemental stateside instruction set at $24,000.00.   Graduating seniors who are applying to graduate schools, and current graduate students. Must be U.S. Citizens
Requirements:
(a) a cumulative GPA of 3.50 for current seniors; (b) current graduate students must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.80; (c) must intend federal government careers related to: international affairs or diplomacy; international trade or economics; sustainable development; global disease or hunger; population growth or migration
 
Boren Scholarship
  Coverage amounts vary by length of experience and documented expenses, with the maximum award for a two-semester experience set at $20,000.00   All Graduate and Undergraduate students. Must be U.S. Citizens
Requirements:
(a) a cumulative GPA of 3.50; (b) must intend federal government careers related to: international affairs or diplomacy; international trade or economics; sustainable development; global disease or hunger; population growth or migration.
 
Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship
  Provides $47500 of funding per year, toward completion of an approved degree in international affairs or a related field, pursuit of a Congressional internship working on international issues, and pursuit of an overseas internship with a U.S. Embassy   Students who possess senior standing or are approaching completion of their first master’s degree. Must be U.S. Citizens
Requirements:
(a) must have amassed extensive international experience in one or more of the following ways: by living/working, studying, interning, and/or volunteering abroad; by interning, working, and/or volunteering for U.S.-based international organizations; by interning or working for government agencies focused on international issues and affairs; (b) “A” grades for EIU courses related to international affairs; (c) a cumulative GPA of 3.80
 
Charles B. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program
  Includes a coursework component as well as the opportunity to interact with current field professionals, and funding covers tuition, housing, two meals a day, and travel expenses. A $3200 stipend is also provided   Full time sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens
Requirements:
(a) must be able to demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a career in international affairs through one of the following: (1) a semester-long, or summer-long, or year-long study abroad; (2) work for a company located outside the U.S.; (3) work for a U.S. office of an international organization; (4) work for a state or federal government office or agency; (5) work for a U.S.-based NGO or service organization concerned with international issues; (b) “A” grades for all EIU courses related to international affairs; (c) a cumulative GPA of 3.80
 
Critical Language Scholarship
  Covers all expenses associated with 8–10-week intensive, immersive summer language programs   U.S. citizens with sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student status who will not have completed their current degree in advance of the CLS program
Requirements:
(a) intend careers requiring fluency in their target language; (b) must be as passionate about learning the culture of the people who speak their target language as they are passionate about learning the language itself; (c) have as one of their goals the building or strengthening of bridges between their host culture and U.S. society
 
Donald M. Payne International Affairs Program
  Provides $45000 of funding per year, toward completion of an approved degree in international affairs or a related field, pursuit of a Congressional internship working on international issues, and pursuit of an overseas internship with a USAID Mission
Requirements:
(a) must have amassed extensive international experience in one or more of the following ways: (1) by living/working, studying, interning, and/or volunteering abroad; (2) by interning, working, and/or volunteering for U.S.-based international organizations; (3) by interning or working for government agencies focused on international issues and affairs; (b) possess an academic record that includes both “A” grades for EIU courses related to international affairs; (c) a cumulative GPA of 3.80
 
Fulbright U.S. Student Program
  Fulbright U.S. Student Program | Exchange Programs (state.gov)   Recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master’s and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists
Requirements:
Grants are awarded based upon the perceived merit and feasibility of the proposed project and the potential of the applicant to complete the proposed project. EIU students are not competitive candidates with less than a 3.80 cumulative GPA
 
Fulbright U.S.-UK Summer Institutes
  Round-trip airfare, Tuition and fees at the host institution, Accommodations, In some cases a small daily allowance for meals   U.S. citizens of 18+ years of age who are second-semester freshmen or first-semester sophomores
Requirements:
(a) GPAs of at least 3.80; (b) little to no prior study or travel experience outside the U.S.; (c) a career objective aligned with the focus of the Institute to which they applied
 
Gates Cambridge Scholarship
  Covers most expenses related to study, and provides a maintenance allowance for the award recipient   Applicants may be citizens of any country outside the U.K
Requirements:
(a) a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA; (b) a record of extensive and focused research/creative activity pertinent to the academic program selected for application; (c) a record of responsible, long-term, and focused campus-based and broader community-based leadership and service experience; (e) an obvious deep-seated desire to use the practice of their profession to make the world a better place for all people; (f) an obvious deep-seated passion for the U.K., the University of Cambridge, and the academic program selected for application.
 
George J. Mitchell Scholarship
  Covers tuition and fees, housing, and transit necessary to the pursuit of one year of graduate study, in any discipline, at any of the following Irish institutions of higher learning: Dublin City University, Technological University Dublin, Dun Laoghaire IADT, National University of Ireland, Galway, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Trinity College Dublin, Ulster University, University College Cork, University College Dublin, University of Limerick   U.S. citizens between 18 and 29 years of age, who will have completed undergraduate degrees prior to award conferral
Requirements:
(a) a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA; (b) a record of extensive and focused research, creative, or employment activity pertinent to the academic program selected for application; (c) responsible leadership and service experience, that is long-term, focused, and at least in part based in the broader community outside EIU; (e) an obvious deep-seated desire to use the practice of their profession to make the world a better place for all people; (f) an obvious deep-seated passion for Ireland, the host institution selected for application, and the academic program selected for application.
 
James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program
  Fellows are paid a monthly salary and receive medical, dental, and life insurance coverage as well as limited vacation leave. Housing is not provided   Graduating seniors. All candidates must be U.S. students or international students possessing an F-1 visa. If applicable to both their intended career path and the Carnegie research project applied to, candidates must also possess near-native fluency in a language other than English.
Requirements:
(a) pursued degrees focused on international studies or environmental studies; (b) undertaken independent research related to their principal interest area, through completion of 4000-level courses in their major, assistance with ongoing faculty research projects, and/or the pursuit of off-campus REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) or research internships; (c) earned a cumulative GPA of 3.80.
 
Marshall Scholarship
  Covers one or two years of post-baccalaureate study at a British university, provides for travel expenses to/from the United States, requisite tuition and fees, most living expenses, and a limited allowance for study-related travel   U.S. citizens with an undergraduate degree conferred prior to start of coursework
Requirements:
(a) a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA; (b) a record of extensive and focused research/creative activity pertinent to the academic program selected for application; (c) responsible leadership and service experience, that is both long-term and focused; (e) an obvious deep-seated passion for the U.K., the host institution selected for application, and the academic program selected for application.
 
Rhodes Scholarships
  Provides opportunity to study for two or three years at various colleges in the University of Oxford system, as they pursue second bachelor’s degrees, or one or two master’s degrees, covers most educational expenses and provide for moderate living expenses   Applicants must have completed their first Baccalaureate degree before beginning this academic program. Applicants must be citizens of one of the following countries: Australia; Bermuda; Botswana; Canada; China; Germany; Hong Kong; India; Jamaica and the Commonwealth of the Caribbean; Kenya; Lesotho; Malawi; Namibia; New Zealand; Pakistan; South Africa; Swaziland; United Arab Emirates; United States; Zambia; Zimbabwe.
Requirements:
(a) a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA; (b) a record of extensive and focused research/creative activity pertinent to the academic program selected for application; (c) a record of responsible, long-term, and focused campus-based and broader community-based leadership and service experience; (e) an obvious deep-seated desire to use the practice of their profession to make the world a better place for all people; (f) an obvious deep-seated passion for the U.K., the University of Oxford, and the academic program selected for application.
 
Schwarzman Scholars Program
  Provides a fully funded, one-year master’s degree and leadership program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China   Students must be in the final stages of completing their undergraduate degrees and must be between 18 and 29 years of age
Requirements:
(a) a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA; (b) a record of responsible, long-term, and focused campus-based and broader community-based leadership and service experience; (c) a record of having previously Chinese language, culture, politics, or business; (d) a record of having previously pursued extended study or work abroad; (e) demonstrate academic excellence through their prior successful completion of (1) advanced undergraduate coursework, (2) preliminary graduate coursework, (3) independent research or scholarly creative activity, (4) a strong presentational and/or publication record that permitted original work to be granted an audience beyond EIU
 
Soros Fellowship for New Americans
  Provides up to $45,000 per year for up to two years of coursework leading to the conferral of an advanced degree   All candidates must be under 30 years of age, must have completed their undergraduate degrees, and may or may not have already begun the first or second year of a multi-year graduate degree for which Soros funding is sought
Requirements:
(a) demonstrate promise for applying creative, original thought in approaching difficult issues and challenging circumstances; (b) be driven to achieve ends, within their chosen field, that support the rights and/or well-being of others and the improvement of some aspect of American society; (c) be comfortable communicating their own immigrant story and discussing how that story has influenced their personal, academic, and professional development and goals; (d) a 3.90 cumulative GPA for all undergraduate and/or graduate coursework completed
 
Udall Undergraduate Scholarship
  Provides up to $5000 toward the junior or senior year of undergraduate study, for students who plan on pursuing careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care   Sophomores or juniors enrolled as full-time students at the time of application. U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents
Requirements:
(a) a 3.50 cumulative GPA; (b) a strong record of public advocacy or activism, related to their Udall area of interest; (c) a prior awareness of the legislative legacy of Morris and Stewart Udall, or a willingness to explore that legacy as part of the application process.
