Welcome to the twelfth edition of Historia, the history journal of Eastern Illinois University and the Epsilon Mu chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. This year's journal represents an excellent collection of undergraduate and graduate history papers, whose inclusion was determined by our editorial staff's blind and rigorous selection process. All articles were solicited, screened, selected, edited, and published by students.
We sought a variety of approaches and historical periods. We also solicited papers from lower class and upper class undergraduates, as well as M.A. students in History and in Historical Administration. We chose these from a pool of over thirty very good submissions. Each submission was evaluated by at least four members of our editorial board and then discussed in two long but fruitful meetings of the entire board.
A look at the table of contents shows that this edition covers historical topics ranging from early modern to contemporary times. From sixteenth century Latin America to a tumultuous 1960s America, this year's Historia encompasses varied topics including the Clubmen of seventeenth century England, American Civil War abolitionism, and the American occupation of Cuba at the dawn of the twentieth century. There are also three articles with ties to Illinois. Amish wedding traditions practiced just twenty-five miles from Charleston, the Great Depression's effects on Maywood, and the Vietnam era protests on the Eastern Illinois' campus are included.
We would like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of Dr. Newton Key, a true historian, and other members of Eastern Illinois University's History Department faculty for their efforts in recommending papers for the journal and assisting in the review process. We also thank the students that submitted articles for their efforts. The terrific student papers are the heart of our journal. We hope you enjoy reading Historia.
