Following two years of collecting and recording the identities and locations of over 4,000 trees on campus, Steven Di Naso, Vince Gutowski, Lorien Lemmon and Kyle Boatright created a carbon sequestration model of the campus using tree biomass. A side benefit of their study was the creation of a campus tree inventory map showing tree locations.
Kyle and Lorien located all trees on campus. They were supervised and assisted by Mike Carter (FPM-Roofing), Steven Di Naso (Geology/Geography), Vince Gutowski (Geoloy/Geography), Brent McCullough (FPM-Grounds), and Justin Perry (FPM-Grounds). Both Kyle and Lorien were Environmental Biology majors and Geographic Information System (GIS) minors.
Additionally, Eastern Illinois University gained "Tree Campus USA" recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation in 2010 as a result of this project.
