The primary mission of the Department of Biological Sciences is to provide an exceptional education to both undergraduate and graduate students.
If you have a passion for understanding how cells and living organisms function, and enjoy scientific experimentation and field or laboratory studies, then you should consider majoring in Biological Sciences. Biological Sciences is the study of living organisms (bacteria, algae, protozoans, fungi, plants, and animals). It is a large discipline that encompasses molecules and cells, organs and organ systems, organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. Biologists study cell and molecular Biological Sciences, genetics and evolution, organismal Biological Sciences, systematics and ecology, and behavior.
Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences students interested in botany, zoology, ecology and systematics, and cell and molecular Biological Sciences who want to pursue careers in Biological Sciences, including wildlife Biological Sciences, fisheries Biological Sciences, endangered species Biological Sciences, work in nurseries, garden centers, and zoo or become natural resources managers should pursue the Biological Sciences option. The EVB is a Biological Sciences degree that specifically focuses on environmental issues. The interests of EVB majors cover a wide range of topics. Students in the program are interested in Natural Resources Management, Pollution, Ecology, Ecotoxicology, Conservation, Renewable Energy, Wildlife Rehabilitation and many, many other topics. EIU offers pre-health-professions coursework to prepare students for admission to medical programs at other institutions. Click here for more information on this program.
The Secondary Science Teacher Certification Program at Eastern Illinois University provides students with an opportunity to prepare for a career as a high school science teacher. Successfully completing this course of study and passing the written certification examinations will allow candidates to teach a variety of high school science courses. "My research focuses on using plants for bioenergy and bioproduct applications. One aspect of my research involves using biotechnology to tailor plant traits for specific applications, such as bioethanol production."
Dr. Nathan's research centers around neuroscience with special interest in neurological diseases. His current research is aimed at understanding the pathological pathways that lead to death of brain cells in aging humans, and predisposes them to dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.
“My research focuses on how fish populations respond to anthropogenic impacts. Specifically, I am interested in the responses of native fishes to harvest, invasive species and habitat alterations. Most of my research focuses on commercially or ecologically important species in lotic (flowing) water system."
"EIU's education extends far beyond the classroom, providing strong, applicable skills I've continued to use past graduation and throughout my career. The sincerity and passion behind the professors has provided me with experiences I'll carry with me for a lifetime."
Paul Edwards, Environmental Toxicology (2012)"There's so much out there waiting for you. So many opportunities to do research to find employment. Just go and explore everything that Eastern has to offer, because you won't find it anywhere else. It's really one of the best choices I've made.”
Jennifer Kim, Biological Sciences (2014)"The small class sizes, hands-on lab experiences, and engaged instructors who consistently delivered detailed feedback on my scientific writing and career advice provided me with the best possible groundwork to be a successful neuroscientist.""
Apryl E. Pooley, Biological Sciences Bachelor's (2008), MS (2011)"Whether it be through receiving prestigious summer research fellowships at several universities, internships, or performing honors research through the EIU Departmental Honors Program, I have developed professionally as a student of science and medicine.”
