Eastern Illinois University acknowledges the use of Turnitin as a learning and evaluation tool. The goal is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully and properly cite references while composing original and authentic written works for classes and professional publications. Turnitin solutions promote academic integrity, streamline grading and feedback, deter plagiarism, and improve student outcomes.
Turnitin solutions in which EIU subscribes include
In April of 2023, Turnitin released its AI writing detection capabilities to help educators uphold academic integrity while ensuring that students are treated fairly. Turnitin added an AI writing indicator to the Similarity Report. It shows an overall percentage of the document that AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT, may have generated. The indicator further links to a report which highlights the text segments that the Turnitin model predicts were written by AI. We encourage faculty to review the Guidance on Adapting to AI and Academic Integrity provided by the FDIC. This document includes information about the AI detection results and interpretation in Turnitin, talking with students about academic integrity and AI, and adapting for AI. Additional resources can be found in the Artificial Intelligence Toolkit.
On August 8, 2023, Turnitin Onboarding Consultant, Kenneth Rogers, conducted a webinar for EIU faculty and staff demonstrating Turnitin settings in D2L Brightspace, interpreting the similarity report, Turnitin's grading and feedback tools, and approaches to academic integrity.
