EIU Master of Science in Sustainability

Dual Degree Program: Master of Science in Sustainability & Professional Science Master’s in Geographic Information Sciences (GIS)

The EIU Master of Science Dual Degree Program offers graduate students an opportunity to obtain degrees in both the Master of Science in Sustainability and Professional Science Master’s in Geographic Information Sciences (GISci) concurrently.

The dual Master’s Degree between the Professional Science Master’s in Geographic Information Sciences (GISci) and the Master of Science (MS) in Sustainability is an excellent blending of two programs because of their shared focus in preparing students in applied science and technology with a management focus. The mission of a dual master’s degree program is to allow graduate candidates to pursue complementary programs of graduate study simultaneously.

The Master of Science in Sustainability graduate degree program focuses on preparing leaders and managers for the entire energy industry. This multi-disciplinary degree is science based and technology management focused. The multi-disciplinary Master of Science in Sustainability degree is a science and technology management focused graduate program.  It is designed to empower and enable students to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to become effective leaders and managers in the energy sector.  In addition to graduate course work across multiple disciplines, students are enriched with experiences related to sustainable energy. Students are required to carry out energy related research throughout the graduate studies program. In addition, students are required to complete a practicum whereas graduate students will job shadow various operations related to energy production, conversion and conservation. At the conclusion of the practicum, students are expected to document the flow of materials, energy, information and people of those operations.

Professional Science Master's in Geographic Information Sciences (PSM in GISci) graduate program is an interdisciplinary program designed to facilitate students' pursuit of an advanced degree with training in the Geographic Information Sciences, while simultaneously developing business skills highly valued by potential employers. Experiences provided by the faculty in the classroom, laboratory and field will prepare the student for internship opportunities. Each experience will form a basis for the degree requirements of the program as well as for preparing the successful graduate to address the documented local and regional workforce needs in business, government and non-profit sectors.
