This 18-hour Graphic Design minor, comprised of courses already part of the art curriculum taught by tenured faculty, allows students outside of the department to gain the essential training in design thinking (concepting, prototyping, iteration, testing) to solve communication design problems in print and interactive/motion graphics. Students will develop a working knowledge of aesthetic and design principles.
Current data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests there will be a 27 percent increase in the number of web developers to around 188,000 job opportunities. By 2024, we will see over 300,000 new positions added to the arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media sectors. The graphic design area is in a unique position to educate these new designers and to help train students outside of our program throughout the university. In conjunction with the School of Technology, we have negotiated to be included as an optional minor in the proposed BS in Digital Media degree.
