A Major in World Languages: Your Ticket to Working in a Global Economy.
Students majoring in French prepare to communicate and connect in the multicultural and multilingual world we share... and so much more! Master the basics of grammar and conversation, then move on to advanced classes in language, literature, and culture. Our teaching methods follow the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages to give you both linguistic and cultural proficiency.
Our content courses will get you ready for an international career, graduate school, or just traveling the world! Learn about Africa and other francophone regions of the world in Introduction to Francophone Studies. Further strengthen your grammar skills in Advanced French Expression. Learn about the peoples and their cultures who speak French in our French and Francophone Culture class. All of our courses give students the opportunity to interact with authentic examples of French and francophone media, short stories, novels, films, and music.
Customize your French Major! Our flexible major in World Languages and Cultures allows you to combine your French classes with work in other departments related to international or diversity studies. Choose coursework from areas such as history, geography, political science, or business. Or, choose a linguistic focus and show your language versatility by picking up introductory courses in a second (or third, or fourth) world language. In addition to French, we offer beginning courses in Chinese, German, and Spanish. Many students double major or minor in related fields such as History, Political Science, Philosophy, Communication Studies, Military Science, or Entrepreneurship.
A major in French gives you the skills employers want. Our students can form relationships with people from diverse communities, work comfortably with uncertainty and ambiguity, and communicate effectively in both English and their world language. Our recent graduates currently enjoy careers as travel agents, medical assistants, college admisisons recruiters, study abroad coordinators, lawyers, and law enforcement officers.
