Whether they’re pets, livestock or working animals, animals matter to individuals and society. Every community needs veterinary professionals to provide animal health care, but veterinarians also do many other kinds of jobs. They make sure the nation’s food supply is safe. They work to control the spread of diseases. They conduct research that helps both animals and humans. Veterinarians are at the forefront of protecting the public’s health and welfare.
Most students accepted into a four-year professional veterinary medicine program have earned a baccalaureate degree before they enter that program. Many pre-veterinary students at EIU prepare for application for admission to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, since preference is given to Illinois residents. However, EIU alumni have attended various veterinary medicine programs across the country.
Application is made during the spring semester of the junior year through a centralized application service, and a student may apply to many schools simultaneously. Acceptance to the professional school is based on the grade point average in college courses, scores on the Graduate Record Exam, letters of recommendation, and experience in the field of veterinary medicine.
