Physicians support and manage the health care of people of all ages. They take medical histories, perform physical examinations, conduct diagnostic tests, recommend and provide treatment, conduct research, and advise patients on their overall health and well-being.
Admission into medical school is very competitive. Students should maintain a grade point average near or above 3.50/4.00, acquire leadership skills, exposure to healthcare, and score well on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Typically, the MCAT is taken during the junior year, and an application through the centralized application service is submitted in June between the junior and senior years.
Since medical schools do not require any specific major, students may choose any major they desire while ensuring they complete the coursework required for admission to medical school. Most students prepare for medical schools by majoring in the sciences, but medical schools look for a well-rounded background in humanities, social sciences and service. A baccaulaurate degree is required for admission to medical school.
