EIU's English Language Arts teacher licensure program has consistently been recognized as among the best programs for preparing English Language Arts teachers, not just in the state of Illinois but nationally. The National Council of Teachers of English recognized EIU’s program as an “exemplar program for training Secondary English Teachers.” Our students consistently excel both at Eastern and in their careers as educators.
Students who are interested in teaching drama often double major or combine the ELA major with a Theatre minor. Some students also pursue other double majors or minors if they're interested in teaching more than one subject.
You won't have to wait for for senior year to get classroom experience. At EIU, teachers in training start observing in classrooms and taking on other practical activities early in their studies so that by the time student teaching arrives, they are super-confident and ready.

Teaching is serious business--but it's a lot of fun, too. In the EIU ELA major, we'll help you learn to balance the work and the fun so you can pursue your passion and get there on time. The major consists of 55 credits, including two courses in writing, three courses in English Education, five courses in literature and cultural studies, and a senior-level capstone course, Integrating the Language Arts. In addition, students select two English electives.
Many of our successful alumni began their EIU career by transferring from a community college or another four-year college. To help you make the transition, in your first semester, we'll ask you to take a one-semester course called English Forum. This class is required for all new students in the English major, whether they are transfer students, new freshmen, or upperclassmen who have newly declared the major. This course is designed to help you hit the ground running, getting you connected with faculty, fellow students, and other campus resources to make completing your degree the best possible experience.
