Do you want to help people? If so, you have found the right major!
High-Impact learning is the key to our programs in Human Services. Students participate in experiential learning opportunities including practicum, service learning in the community, work-place internships, and study abroad opportunities. Graduates become leaders in a wide range of human services programs that improve quality of life for individuals, families and communities throughout the lifespan.
Graduates leave the program with an interdisciplinary knowledge base as well as practical experience gained through a required practicum and involvement with the development, facilitation, and evaluation of family programming through the onsite Child and Family Life Education Center. Human Services provides a good foundation for a graduate degree in human services, aging studies, social work, or related fields, and completion of the degree allows graduates to apply for provisional status as Certified Family Life Educators (CFLE) through the National Council on Family Relations.

Human Services students jump right into activities within our department. Freshman classes introduce the discipline of human services and include content on human development, family relationships, and research in health services. Departmental events, work with the student Ambassadors, are great opportunities to connect with others both face-to-face and remotely.
We are proud of the opportunities we offer students transferring into Human Services. Our program articulates with multiple courses in almost every community college in Illinois, and has formal articulation plans with multiple programs. Our academic advisor, Ms. Alisa Gray, meets with each transfer student, reviews transfer evaluations, and develops a plan that provides a clear path to success in the program. HSL’s rotating schedule of face-to-face and online classes provide flexibility for students with child care or work-related constraints.
