EIU MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY OR SPORTS ADMINISTRATION

Exercise Physiology

Students in our Exercise Physiology degree program have flexibility in their course work to prepare for careers in scientifically based exercise programs with an emphasis on cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness or personal training and strength and conditioning. We are proud to be able to offer preparation for certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

The program focuses on scholarship through critical evaluation of related research and a knowledge of professional standards. The Exercise Physiology program provides meaningful hands-on experience as students spend a significant amount of time working with staff and participants in two ongoing year-round community adult exercise initiatives: the EIU Adult Fitness Program and the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. The graduate program in Exercise Physiology awards five competitive graduate assistantships, beginning each fall, for a period of nine months. Exercise Physiology GA's will gain extensive experience working closely with the EIU Adult Fitness Program, teaching undergraduate activity courses, and supervising undergraduate students in the Assessment Testing and Prescription Laboratory. Other graduate assistant opportunities exist with the EIU Student Recreation Center. For more information about graduate assistantships, please click here Graduate Assistantships.

There are three prerequisite courses necessary for admission into the Exercise Physiology degree program. These courses can be taken during the first semester of the graduate program or can be taken prior to application. The three prerequisite courses are:

KSS 4340 - Principles of Exercise Physiology (or equivalent)

KSS 4440 - Physical Fitness Appraisal (or equivalent)

KSS 4450 - Exercise Prescription (or equivalent)

Please consult the graduate coordinator if you have questions regarding the prerequisite courses for the Exercise Physiology concentration.
