Civil Service & Extra Help

Public universities in the State of Illinois are required to classify professional (non-academic), technical, and support staff according to established civil service categories. All staff jobs, except those determined by the Civil Service Merit Board to be administrative/professional in nature, are classified as civil service. To be considered for Civil Service Positions you must complete and submit an application and pass an examination.

Temporary extra help are civil service employees hired on a temporary basis to handle emergent excess workloads within a department. These employees may work up to a total of 900 hours. At that time, the employee must be terminated for at least 30 days before they can be rehired in another extra help position.

Civil service openings are sometimes advertised online; however, you should test for any EIU civil service classification in which you are interested before a vacancy occurs. Read about the hiring process to learn how the hiring system works for Civil Service.

Assistant Director of Business & Retail Operations - MLK Jr. Union

The Assistant Director of Business and Retail Operations oversees the departmental financial processes for the MLK Jr. Union and Textbook Rental Service while directly supervising the EIU Bookstore and Union Ticket Office operations. Reporting to the Director of the MLK Jr. Union/Textbook Rental Service, the Assistant Director of Business and Retail Operations serves on the MLK Jr. Union leadership team and supports the business needs of all MLK Union operational areas.

Description of Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the EIU Bookstore and Union Ticket Office operations. Provide financial and operational support for Textbook Rental Service.
  2. Directly supervise the MLK Union Business Manager and EIU Bookstore Manager.
  3. Assist in budget development and financial strategic planning initiatives for the MLK Union and Textbook Rental Service.
  4. Monitor the financial status of all businesses in the MLK Union and Textbook Rental Service operation and assist with fiscal responsibilities to support each area.
  5. Collaborate with EIU Business Office entities and Procurement Office to ensure institutional finance policies and procedures are followed.
  6. Research and develop additional revenue sources for the MLK Union.
  7. Oversee Point-of-Sale (POS) technology/cash registers in each operational area and create inventory and financial reports for operational areas.
  8. Provide operational support to Textbook Rental Service and Campus Scheduling Office/Union facility operations.
  9. Support off-site and campus events for the EIU Bookstore, Union Liquor Services, and Campus Scheduling Office on a rotational basis.
  10. Due to the scope of work, regular night and weekend hours are required.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position. Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.
  3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.

Salary: $4,500-5,500/Month

Assistant Director of University Student Center

The Assistant Director Building Services serves on the departmental leadership team and provides leadership and supervision of the MLK Union’s primary service areas: Panther Print & Copy Center, and Union Bowling Alley. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Campus Scheduling and works closely with all areas in the MLK Union to promote and execute the department’s mission and goals.

Description of Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the operations and directly supervise managers of the Panther Print & Copy Center, and Union Bowling Alley.
  2. Assist the Campus Scheduling Office with event planning and execution of events.
  3. Troubleshoot audio/visual equipment in meeting rooms and provide customer support while assisting with the daily operations of the MLK Union.
  4. Develop and execute an annual student-employee training program for Union operational area student employees.
  5. Recommend upgrades needed to furniture, fixtures, and equipment in all Union service areas and public spaces of the MLK Union.
  6. Assist the Associate Director of Campus Scheduling with various administrative functions such as departmental inventory, high-profile event planning, Building Service Worker (BSW) project planning, and student employee supervision/training.
  7. Oversee departmental assessment and research initiatives while conducting outreach for best practices.
  8. Provide on-site assistance for Union Liquor services on a rotational basis.
  9. Due to the scope of work, regular night and weekend hours are required.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree (120 hours) leading to a major in student personnel, business administration, or a closely related field.
  2. Two (2) years (24 months) of experience in the management of a university/college student union/center or college/university conference unit. Note: A Master's Degree or higher in student personnel, business administration, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

 Salary: $4,500 - $5,500/Month

Salary: $20.00-21.50 / hour

IT Technical Associate – DBA Support

Eastern Illinois University’s Information Technology Services is seeking qualified applicants for the position of IT Technical Associate – DBA Support.  This position will be responsible for planning, analysis, coordination, support and maintenance of the ERP system Ellucian Banner and all components such as: Banner 9, ESM, DegreeWorks, Smartcall and ODS. The database administrator is at times also the primary point of contact between users, outside entities and support resources.

Duties will include: 

  • Plan, maintain and monitor all oracle databases used for the universities ERP application.
  • Develop backup plans and monitor RMAN backups daily. 
  • Troubleshoot database performance issues, tune databases or SQL processes as needed.
  • Coordinate efforts to follow best practices for Banner and Oracle environment (including maintaining version control over Oracle and Banner-specific software on database servers and applications servers).
  • Apply Banner and Oracle patches and upgrades and coordinate user testing.
  • Provide support to users for software application and job process issues.
  • DBA Group will serve as primary contact for Banner and Oracle operations, including off-hours to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems for Banner, Oracle, or critical job processes. 

Required Qualifications

Any combination totaling two years from the following categories:

1.     Progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession.

2.    College course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or closely related discipline where 60 semester hours or an Associate’s degree equals one year and 120 semester hours or a Bachelor’s degree equals two years.

An additional two years’ experience in an IT profession is also required.

Preferred Qualifications

-       Knowledge and skills in Ellucian Banner ERP, Banner 9/XE Administration, DW, ESM, Application Navigator, Linux, tomcat and Oracle RDBMS, SQL, RMAN, ODI, OEM.

-       Shell scripting and ability to automate repeatable Oracle and Linux tasks.

-       Ability to work independently and as part of a group, multitask and prioritize tasks.                                       

-       Good communication skills and willingness to work with users for training and problem resolution.

Salary: $4762.46/monthly

Police Officer: Lateral Transfer
Closes: Open Until Filled Category: Civil Service Full-TimeUniversity Police

The State University Civil Service System for Illinois now allows Eastern Illinois University to maintain a lateral transfer list for Police Officer positions.  Interested law enforcement officers will be required to submit an application to be considered for this list.  Applicants must be employed as a law enforcement officer from outside of our State Universities and employed at either a municipal law enforcement agency, a county sheriff’s office, Illinois State Police, or a similar municipal public safety department.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an Illinois resident or agree to become a resident of Illinois within 180 days after following the date of his/her appointment.
  • Demonstrate at least two years of full-time law enforcement work experience. (Required duties assigned must have included: making arrests, enforcing laws, investigating crimes, responding to calls for service, using discretion as part of the assigned duties, and carrying firearms.)
  • Have no more than a two-year break in service from the time he/she left a comparable law enforcement agency and the time he/she makes his/her application to Eastern Illinois University HR.
  • Possess certification from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) as a certified full-time police officer. (Or be eligible to be granted a waiver of basic training from ILESTB.)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Be a member in good standing in the police department in which the applicant currently serves or has been separated from with no adverse employment action.
  • Pass a background investigation which may include features such as fingerprinting, police records check, credit check, and inquiries of neighbors, relatives, and employers.
  • Successfully complete a screening such as a polygraph, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug screening, as required by the hiring department.

Program Coordinator - Student Insurance

Eastern Illinois University Health is seeking candidates for a Program Coordinator – Student Insurance for the Health and Counseling Services - Student Insurance.  This position is responsible for the management of EIU’s Student Insurance plan.  Duties for this position include:

  • Administration of the Student Insurance Plan and Varsity Athletic Plan.
  • Oversee staff in the enrollment, counseling of benefits, waivers, and disposition of claims.
  • Manage discount agreements with medical providers.
  • Manage mandatory student insurance enrollment of student athletes, graduate assistants, and international students.
  • Oversee administration of institution’s compliance with the Illinois College Immunization Act for all new students.
  • Oversee administration of institution’s International Student TB Screening.
  • Oversee administration of institution’s Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Monitoring Program.

Requirements for this position are:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a health-related field, business administration/management, HR management, or closely related area.
  2. One year of supervisory experience/ responsibility in a healthcare environment working with medical claims, denials, rejections, referrals, and prior authorizations.

7. Develop, train, and support the Early Childhood Active Learning Classroom.

9. Supervise student workers and graduate students in the ITC and Active Learning
Classroom in the College of Education.
10. Work with the Dean of the College of Education and ITC Advisory Board to develop,
implement, and evaluate ITC technology and programming consistent with K-12
standards.
11. Collaborate with the Center for Student Innovation (CSI) on instructional technology
initiatives.
12. Advise the Director of the Faculty Development and Innovation Center on instructional
technologies needs and new and emerging technologies.


Required Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Education, Educational Technology, Training and Development,
Digital Media Technology, or a closely related field.
(A Bachelorís degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position plus three

  • Collaborate with stewardship and engagement colleagues on developing strategic engagement plans for key alumni and donors.
  • Develop and maintain close collaborative partnerships with campus and unit colleagues to ensure a strong baseline knowledge of campus, college, and unit programs and priorities and an ability to devise and execute sound prospect strategies for philanthropic opportunities.
  • Participate in advancement strategy meetings, assisting colleagues and providing support for all ongoing programs and operations as needed to help meet the fundraising goals.
  • Document all activities, interactions, and other relevant data in the alumni/donor database.
  • Serve as the point of contact for assigned units for all fund administration and management questions.

 Qualifications

Assistant Professor of Psychology

The Psychology Department at Eastern Illinois University (EIU) has an opening for a full-time (9-month) Assistant Professor, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2025. Duties include teaching graduate courses in clinical psychology or school psychology and undergraduate courses in area of expertise, maintaining an active research program, supervising graduate student theses and practicum experiences, and participating in service to the department and university.

The department serves approximately 363 undergraduate and graduate students. The department has two undergraduate programs (psychology and neuroscience), as well as two graduate programs (clinical psychology and school psychology). The department also houses a psychological services clinic, as well as several research laboratories.

The ideal candidate should have a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology (APA- accredited), or a doctoral degree in school psychology (APA-accredited or NASP-approved). Equal consideration will be given to both areas. ABD candidates in these areas will also be considered. We will also consider individuals with doctoral degrees in applied or developmental psychology, but these applicants must be able to demonstrate teaching and research interests in line with the Clinical Psychology or School Psychology program. Other requirements include demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence at the college/university level and a commitment to research and scholarly work. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and promoting inclusive excellence is also required.

 

The MA Program in Clinical Psychology is designed for students with career interests in master's-level clinical practice or those who plan to obtain a doctorate. The foundation of the Clinical Psychology program is the scientist-practitioner model with training rooted in theoretical knowledge and ethical practice, including an internship and a required thesis. The program typically enrolls 8-12 students each fall with a current total of 21 students across the two-year program.

The Masters en route to the Specialist in School Psychology program offers NASP-approved training with a scientist-practitioner model. Students gain applied training in assessment, problem solving, therapeutic techniques and educational intervention, consultation and research. With 50+ years of experience, the school psychology program at EIU is recognized for its rigor and high standards in Illinois and across the country. The program typically enrolls 8-10 students each fall with approximately 18 students across the three-year program.

Plant Physiologist
