Career Paths for English Majors: Law

Christen Smith, Senior Legal Contract Specialist, EIU English, class of 2009Competition for admission to law school and for jobs as lawyers is intense. Because advanced reading and writing skills are essential for law students, the English major offers strong preparation. At EIU, students interested in law school take the Prelaw minor.

EIU English alumni practice law at large and small firms, from Mattoon, IL, to Chicago and Washington, DC.

The employment outlook: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 there were 778,700 people working as lawyers. The field is projected to grow by 6% through 2024. *

Does this sound like you? Lawyers represent businesses, organizations and individuals in legal matters. Though some argue criminal cases in court, many lawyers rarely do. Lawyers must have excellent attention to detail, be able to conduct research, write well, and work well with a wide variety of people.
