Dr. Leon Francis

Dr. Leon Francis (BS, '57); ) BS Chemistry and Biochemistry: MS Engineering, UCLA; Ph.D. Electrical Engineering, UC Irvine (1971) He entered EIU in 1951 (then named Eastern Illinois State College) with a chemistry major, left in 1953 for two years in the Air Force, then in Sept. 1955 returned to Eastern to finish. After graduating he went to work in Aerospace Engineering at Marquardt Aircraft, Van Nuys, CA on ramjet engines as a chemist and thermodynamicist. Subsequently, he was employed at Lockheed, Ford Aerospace, Chrysler Aerospace, and Hughes Aircraft on a large number of projects. He designed the base heat shield of the S-1B stage of the Saturn moon rocket, and the FLIR-laser designator pod control system for guided bomb delivery used today on F-18 fighters has its origins in the original pod system built by Ford Aerospace in the 1970s, for which Dr. Francis designed the control system; Retired.

Dr. David L. Stockman (BS Ed, '57); Ph.D., University of Minnesota; From 1961-1965 was with Electronics Laboratories, General Electric Company, Syracuse, NY; From 1965 he was with Xerox Corp., Rochester, N. Y.,where his major interests were in lasers and photophysical relaxation processes; Deceased June 12, 2012.
