The featured faculty, staff, or student leader demonstrates how individual efforts contribute to diversity and inclusion on campus.
Lizbeth Arreloa (Liz) is an undergraduate student in the foreign languages department at EIU. Read how Liz contributes to diversity and inclusion from her nominator.
Lizbeth has worked very hard to help other Latino students. She worked with President Perry to change EIU's recruitment process to target more Latino students. She worked with her former high school to bring Latino students to campus. She encouraged the EIU administration to welcome Latino students and their families as they came to campus and to help them navigate the sometimes confusing admissions process. Lizbeth has also worked to change the services that are offered to Latino students already on campus so they will be successful in their pursuit of a degree. She encourages Latino faculty to be more involved with current students and to mentor them. She helped build Latin American Student Organization (LASO) into a strong RSO that encourages Latino students to be involved in community service projects. I have worked with Lizbeth and LASO on several occasions and was pleased to see them reach out to EIU and the Charleston community to share their culture. Lizbeth has been a tremendous advocate and voice for other Latino students to make it easier for them to obtain needed services and to feel that they are part of EIU.
