In any given cohort, graduate students studying speech-language pathology in the Department of Communication Disorders & Sciences at EIU come from 5-10 different undergraduate universities. Students who are accepted into the graduate program have a chance to meet each other, hear about the program, and look at housing options in town on admitted student visit days in the spring. The CDS department also initiates social media opportunities to allow students to begin to interact before they are on campus. During the first summer, the department organizes some social events for the new students (first year grads) to get to know each other as well as the second year grad students since their time on campus overlaps. By the time the busy fall semester arrives with classes and clinic, many friendships have been established. Grad students spend many hours together in the CDS department, but hopefully also find a little time to enjoy themselves too. After grads finish on-campus requirements and leave for internships across the state and country, relationships have often been formed that turn into many life-long friendships.
