INTRODUCTION
Dr. Bulla's research focuses on mechanisms controlling mammalian gene expression and development, especially in the liver. Three areas of interest include: 1) Activation and silencing of hepatic gene expression 2) Using whole-genome profiling to identify master regulators responsible for driving liver function and 3) identifying regulators of fibroblast identify. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
My EIU Story
I spent my childhood on a fruit farm in Grand Junction, Colorado. I earned an Associates degree from the local community college (now Mesa State College), then moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to pursue a degree in microbiology from the University of Colorado. I stayed to earn my Master's degree in virology on a project working with an infectious herpesvirus in bovine. I then entered a PhD prgram in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Colorado and studied the molecular biology of the human Hepatis B Virus under Aleem Siddiqui, PhD. Next, I completed post-doctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA in the laboratory of REK Fournier, PhD focusing on molecular mechanisms that drive cell identity in mammals. My first faculty postion was at Saint Louis University in the Department of Pediatrics at the Pedriatric Research Institute. In 2003, I moved to my current faculty position in the Department of Biological Sciences at EIU, spending 14 years in the role Associate Chair or Chair of the department.
