The Department of Physics has a number of facilities worth mentioning. Each individual area that is listed below gives us capabilities that are helpful in education and also in research. The observational capabilities available at EIU are some of the best east of the Rocky Mountains. Some of the laser facilities would be more likely to be found at a major research institution. The teaching and research facilities give students and faculty opportunities that cannot be found everywhere.
