Parents

Parents are EIU, too…

eiu is door to your students future

First, welcome to the EIU community. Second, relax. We know this chapter of your life as a parent can be stressful, but we will be here with you every step of the way. Follow your future Panther’s application and admission process by signing up for your own MyEIU account (coming soon!), linked to your child’s. There, you can keep up with important dates and steps in the admissions process, and learn more about Eastern and what we can offer for your child’s future.

If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact the Office of Admissions: 877-581-BEIU | admissions@eiu.edu

One of the best resources for parent information is other parents! Be sure to get involved with our Official EIU Parents Group on Facebook and Parents Club, and make plans to attend our annual Family Weekend, where you can connect with parents and get a closer look at your student’s life on campus.

Financial Planning for College

Higher education is a huge investment, but it's one that will pay lifelong dividends for your child. We realize your commitment is enormous, and we take that very seriously. Our Financial Aid office is staffed by caring, trained professionals who will counsel you on your individual situation.

We know almost everyone needs some support. These resources can get you pointed in the right financial direction:

Payment Plans — Looking for a way to make it easier?

Our payment plans are a convenient, flexible and sensible approach to paying for your student’s EIU education. We offer two payment plans, depending on your individual needs.

Option One:

The Panther Open Payment Plan is a flexible, self-managed plan that allows you to make your payments for various amounts at intervals of your choosing.

Option Two:

The Panther Installment Payment Plan provides you with a more structured, monthly payment plan much like other consumer payment plans. A separate contact is required. To learn how you can make smaller, affordable payments instead of paying your bill in one lump sum, visit the bursar's payment site.

EIU4

Sending a student to college is a huge commitment. But, it’s an investment that will make a profound difference in their future. According to the College Board, full-time workers with bachelor’s degrees earn, on average, $21,900 more per year than those with a high school diploma. The ability to graduate from high school and get a high paying job is largely a thing of the past.

students earn more money

A study at Georgetown University found the typical bachelor’s degree recipient can expect to earn about 74 percent more, on average, than those whose highest attainment is a high school diploma.

Student Support

Dropping your student off at Eastern can be daunting.

All of your efforts to get them here culminate in having to let them go. We realize how difficult that can be for you, and for them. It is, however, an essential life transition that launches your child directly into the adult they will become. You can rest assured Eastern offers plenty of resources to support your student in this transition and to ensure that your child thrives personally and academically while they are here.

Along with providing an enriching academic and personal experience, we strive to make sure every student here is safe, and we accomplish that in many ways:

Notification Systems

Warning notification systems such as the emergency notification siren, Alert EIU (phone text messages), and campuswide email alerts are in place. You can sign up for Alert EIU (text messages) at www.eiu.edu/alerteiu.

Police Assistance

The university employs a 22-person armed and sworn police force, with members on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The University Police Department also has mutual aid agreements with both local police and sheriff’s departments and the Illinois State Police.

Additional Resources

Other campus safety resources include campuswide video cameras, 19 emergency call boxes and restricted residence hall access.

After Eastern

Thanks to our Career Services office, students can start the process of entering the workforce before they even graduate by attending career fairs, gaining internships, having their resumes reviewed and attending off-campus job fairs. Many recent news stories have featured unemployed college graduates to illustrate our economy’s dire straits. The truth is that even in a tough economy, college graduates are more likely to be employed — unemployment for people with bachelor’s degrees is half as high as it is for those with only a high school diploma.

Even better news for EIU students is that our graduates are able to secure jobs in their fields at an impressive rate. Of all our 2011 graduates, 86 percent seeking employment found it in their fields within seven months, with some majors reporting significantly higher placement rates and most of these graduates finding their jobs in five months or less.

86% of our grads are employed in their fields within seven months
