EIU Honor Jazz Combo Day

Monday, November 11, 2013

On Monday, November 11, 2013, we will host our annual Eastern Illinois University Honor Jazz Combo Day. Talented high school students from across the state will be selected to participate. The day will include rehearsals, private lessons, and opportunities to play and perform with other participants.

Our faculty includes Sam Fagaly, saxophone, Andrew Cheetham, trumpet, Jemmie Robertson, trombone, Paul Johnston, piano, Scott Hesse, guitar, Nick Tucker, bass, and Jamie Ryan, drums.

Application Procedure

Students wishing to participate must apply. Applications must be received by October 18.

  1. Nomination from director or instructor

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply, and a nomination from a music director or private instructor is required. Click here to download the nomination form.

We will be able to accommodate at least two students on each of the following instruments: alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. If an outstanding student who plays another instrument is nominated and selected, we will certainly welcome him or her.
  2. Recording

Students should send a CD, cassette, or mp3 recording to document brief examples of their command of their instrument and jazz improvisation. It need only be three to five minutes in length, and recording quality is of secondary importance. Students may record themselves playing with a play-along track if that is most convenient. All contact information should be included with the recording.

When the selection process has been completed, directors and students who apply will be notified of the results. Those selected will receive further details regarding the event. A $15 registration fee for participating students will include a recording of the concert. Please mail or e-mail application materials to the following address:
